Ancien libraire, il débute dans la SF en 1954. Auteur, essayiste, anthologiste, critique littéraire.
Space opera traditionnel, humour, speculative fiction... Il a touché, toujours avec succés, à presque tous les genres. Il fut également un des chefs de file de la new wave britannique.
