Ce prix a été créé en 1988, et est décerné annuellement, par les des membres actifs de l'association des écrivains d'horreur américains (Horror Writers Association). Attention, les prix (l'indication de l'année) ont été renommés au début des années 2000 : ainsi les prix attribués en 2003 s'intitulent prix 2002, pour récompenser des oeuvres parues en 2002.
