Ce prix à été créé en 1975, il récompense des oeuvres de fantasy, ou horreur parfois. Le vote à lieu en plusieurs tours : les cinq nominés de chaque catégorie sont determinés en partie par les lecteurs, en partie par un jury renouvelé chaque année. Le choix final est effectué par ce même jury.
Pour plus d'informations, consulter le site de la World Fantasy Convention. Les prix de l'année N sont attribués fin octobre de l'année N et récompensent des oeuvres parues durant l'année N-1.
